Tucked away in Roque Sevilla’s private tropical cloud forest lies the Masphi Lodge, a luxury hotel he built to share the wonders of the Ecuadorian forest with guests from all over the world. As a wildlife enthusiast, Sevilla purchased the land from a lodging company that hadn’t yet had the chance to harvest the forest and the hotel is built on the very spot where the companies offices were once located. It was the only spot on the forest that had been demolished and he preferred to leave the surrounding area untouched. A philosophy which extends to the very hotel itself.
All of the cleaning supplies are organic and bio-degradable and the hotel is designed to leave the smallest ecological footprint possible. This only goes to show that you can indeed combine the highest levels of luxury with nature and they can co-exists with one another. This however requires an immense amount of delicate care. The hotel has maintenance procedures unique to most other hotels as a very humid rain forest isn’t the most ideal environment for many building materials. Challenges aside, the property is stunning.
Huge walls of glass line the rooms and structure giving guests the most unobstructed views achievable from any point in the hotel. The rooms are modern and luxurious and the views do the talking. Wildlife is at guests fingertips. Professional guides on staff offer tours on a daily basis exposing some of the forests hidden gems. When it comes time to unwind guests have access to spectacular cuisine from the hotel’s restaurant and bar using native ingredients and recipes. Sevilla also employs a Resident Biologist who has been with the lodge for nearly a decade and has discovered new species of wildlife and plants. The Masphi Lodge is as much a nature experience as it is luxury hotel. It’s the kind of place you go to when you really want to experience nature in it’s truest form, while not having to sleep in a tent to do so. That’s a win-win in our book. Photos via Mashpi Lodge.
